A technical design assessment completed for Datarock, focused on translating existing reference screens into development-ready interface concepts. I was given a selection of screens from their imaging system and asked to redesign a subset in my preferred design tool, while documenting the reasoning behind my design decisions.

Design Briefing
Datarock is a mining technology company that uses machine learning to turn geological imagery and other mining data into useful geological and geotechnical insights. Its software can analyse drill core photography to help automate traditionally manual logging and data-generation workflows, giving geologists and engineers a more efficient way to review and work with complex geological information.
For this technical assessment, I was provided with a series of existing interface screens from Datarock’s imaging system and asked to explore how I would redesign a selection of them for development. I created a set of low-fidelity designs in Figma, focusing on improving the structure, information hierarchy and usability of the interface while considering how the designs could translate into a functional product.
Alongside the designs, I documented the reasoning behind my decisions, including how information was grouped, how key actions were prioritised and how users could navigate and interact with the data more clearly.

Given the theoretical nature of the assignment, the design choices and user flows are based on UX design practices and assumptions about user needs and preferences in a mining operations context. The aim is to demonstrate an understanding of user-centered design principles and the ability to create an effective and efficient tool for diverse user roles within the mining industry. It is important to note that for this lo-fi design, I have chosen to design for an on-site supervisor.
